John and Joanna Duffy Graduate Student Fellowship

The Henry Samueli School of Engineering’s commitment to diversity is exemplified by providing sources of funding for students from diverse backgrounds. John and Joanna Duffy Graduate Student Fellowship places an emphasis on supporting M.S. students who can enhance the diversity, equity, and inclusion of our graduate programs. By eliminating the need for employment during the fellowship year, this funding allows more time to focus on academics and research.

This highly prestigious award provides an engineering student in a full-time M.S. program with a one-year fellowship, which will cover student fees and tuition and a $18,000 stipend. 

Minimum Criteria

  • Enrolled in a M.S. in Engineering as a full-time student
  • Is a U.S. citizen, permanent resident, or DACA/AB540 eligible
  • Has California residency
  • Demonstrates financial need
  • Has a graduate GPA (for current M.S. students) or undergraduate GPA (for incoming M.S. students) of at least a 3.0
  • Contributes to the diversity of the graduate program through personal experiences or academic interests

Expectations

Fellowship recipients are expected to participate in outreach activities (10 hours/week), attend quarterly graduate student success workshops, and be mentored by a doctoral student or faculty member. Potential outreach activities include STEM tutoring, mentoring, and program support for high school and/or community college students.

Nomination Requirements

    • Faculty nomination is required. Faculty nominations must be submitted to Sharnnia Artis at oai@uci.eduand include:

      • A brief description on why this student should be selected for the John and Joanna Duffy Graduate Student Fellowship
      • Mentoring plan
      • For admitted M.S. in Engineering students, the priority deadline for nominations is March 1st. The final deadline is March 15th.
      • For current M.S. in Engineering students, nominations are accepted and reviewed throughout the year or until funding is exhausted.
